Antinomical Hunger

Hunger Paradox
I listened to this interesting puzzle on Car Talk on NPR.

The other day I was talking to my wife on the phone while we were both at work and we decided to go to our favorite restaurant to get some dinner. As usual at the end of my work day I drove to her office and waited in the parking lot for a few minutes for her to show up. When she did, we made the drive to the restaurant together. By the time that we got there, the parking lot was pretty full but we got lucky and found a spot almost immediately.

Once inside we chatted for a few minutes with the hostess who turned out to be a high-school friend of our daughter and since we were both pretty hungry we quickly looked at the menu and ordered our food. We waited for what seemed to be an eternity although it was probably about 20 minutes or a half an hour and finally our food arrived.

Well after we paid the bill and said, "Good night," to our daughter's friend, we drove home. On the way home I mentioned how hungry I was. We both agreed that we were actually hungrier now than when we first made the drive to the restaurant. Nonetheless we were both satisfied with our decision to get dinner at that restaurant.

How could that be?

Puzzles

A couple of puzzles - the fist one is for warming up and the second one needs some creative thinking!

Back in the old days ships of yesteryear were driven by steam and it was often the case that the ship would outlive the engine and the boiler and they'd have to replace them.

"Now, take one ship for example. When you add the age of the ship and the age of its boiler, it totals 42 years. The ship is twice as old as the boiler was when the ship was as old as the boiler is now."

The question is how old are they?

Now that we are warmed up, here is a harder one!

Pandora, Harry, Alec, Gemima and Geoffrey are animals in a zoo. The other day one of them ate an animal called Tabitha. Who ate her and what type of animal was it?

Copa Cabana

One of my daily pleasures is, attempting to solve Jumble in the newspaper within a minute, without writing circled letters in a separate space. For most of the puzzles, I have no problem in achieving this. Though (in retrospect!) I didn't think that this one is hard, I had to write the letters (as can be seen through badly erased letters) and managed to bust the time on this. Anyway, I loved the answer.

Puzzles

A couple of interesting puzzles from the archives of Parade

(1) My son is a 29-year-old firefighter and Iraq veteran. His nickname is “Seven Eleven.” What is his real name?

(2) Say that cucumbers are on sale, so you buy 100 pounds of them at your local market. The cucumbers are 99% water. Some days later, they dry out to 98% water. How much do they weigh now?
